Wigram Skies resident at breaking point with trucks By Emily O’Connell MORE RESIDENTS in Wigram Skies’ Lodestar Ave want big, noisy trucks stopped from driving through their neighbourhood. And one with a disabled daughter says she will now have to sell up. Wanda Waites, who lives on the corner of Lodestar and Corsair Dr said “the trucks are driving me mad.” They wake her daughter Tara up at 5am every day of the week. Lady Wigram Retirement Village residents are also campaigning to stop the trucks, saying they get woken up at 4.30am. Ms Waites said she plans to

sell up and move to somewhere quieter. She wants Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods to be more proactive in stopping the trucks. Cr Galloway and Dr Woods will meet this Friday to discuss the issue. Dr Woods said yesterday the trucks are a real problem and it is a horrible situation for Ms Waites. The city council is due to bring in the citywide Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017 by the end of the year which will allow restrictions to be placed on streets. •Turn to page 4

This should come as no surprise to Galloway and Woods – Western News has reported on this issue for some months, and the matter went international when rest home owner John Tooby was recorded having a go at his tenants over their campaign to stop the trucks. News Users object to library closure By Emily O’Connell THE CITY council is in the firing line after closing the Upper Riccarton War Memorial Library. The library’s chairwoman Aynslie Walter said the building was undergoing a feasibility study when it was discovered one part of the floor had sunk into the foundation causing cracks in the kitchen, toilet and walls. City council head of building consenting Robert Wright said the library will reopen subject to the required repairs being undertaken. “The building needs to be compliant to the appropriate standard so it may be safely enjoyed by groups in the future,” he said. The city council asked for the library to be closed immediately on October 26 but Mrs Walter objected as they needed to remove resources. They were then given 48 hours to do so, which Mrs Walter said wasn’t long enough. “I got two car loads out – one out on Thursday and we went in at 6.30am on Friday. We didn’t have the transport or the time to do it,” she said. Mrs Walter said the city

There was some deal made but records were lost when the city council took over,” she said. The city council and library members met on Thursday to discuss the situation further.

Mrs Walter said it was a positive meeting but the trustees need time to consider options. She said they’re not sure how much it would cost to repair the library but they will look into it. A public meeting will be held at 10am on December 2 in the Rannerdale Veterans Village meeting room. Mrs Walter said they would like to stress that it’s the building which has closed down, not the library as an organisation. She said books can be returned to the Upper Riccarton Library in the meantime or 80 Woodbury St, Russley.

Skate parks delayed By Emily O’Connell THE TWO planned skate parks in Halswell have been delayed. After three years of planning, the Halswell Domain and Knights Stream skate parks are now expected to be ready by late April, instead of January as initially planned. In June, Western News reported the cost would be $344,605 and $350,000 respectively. The consent process has taken longer than expected and, as a result, construction of both parks has been delayed. City councillor Vicki Buck said the consent application for the Knights Stream skate park was lodged last week and still needs to be granted, which can take up to 20 working days. The city council won’t know if both sites will be managed together until a contractor has been selected. Cr Buck said the Halswell Domain skate park still required further stormwater basin design work. “All design work needs to be completed for the consent application. We are aiming to have the design and application ready to lodge mid-November. The timing of that consent may depend

He said they’ve got a group of young people who have to travel to Prebbleton to get to the closest skate park. “It will mean that we’re starting to get amenities within the community that meet the needs of all the people,” Mr Hawke said. Young directors making their mark By Julia Evans AVONHEAD’S Simon Brown could soon be following in the footsteps of Kiwi director Taika Waititi. While Waititi has been smashing box offices records with his new movie Thor: Ragnarok, Simon and Nina Hogg have created the short film A Perfect Child. The Christ’s and St Margaret’s college students won the award for best senior fiction at the Australian Teachers of Media Awards in Melbourne. It tells the story of Ava, played by St Margaret’s student Tigerlily Perry, a girl who has lost her parents in a car crash and has been sent to an orphanage. She meets Madam Murphy (Eilish Moran, of The Court Theatre) who runs the establishment in a disciplined and firm manner. Ava soon befriends Lauren (Alice Taylor, of St Margaret’s), but finds out that things are not what they seem at the orphanage. When Lauren suddenly turns on her, Ava discovers a laboratory full of clones which the orphanage is trying to make into perfect specimens so they can be adopted more easily.

Taking home an award didn’t come easily. The 18min film took a year to produce from start to finish and involved more than 65 students, mentors and teachers. Simon said the main challenge came from the editing process. A Perfect Child went up against 550 entries in the ATOM awards from across Australia and New Zealand. “The prize-giving was very nerve-racking, especially when

Nina and I had to go up on stage to collect the award. We didn’t realise that we were required to give a short speech and had to improvise but it was taken very well, which was a relief,” Simon said. Nina said many students put their life and soul into the film. “I hope our two schools (St Margaret’s and Christ’s) continue this collaboration as a way to foster interest in the film industry and highlight the talent of

our friends and fellow students,” she said. The ATOM presentation was hosted by Australian TV presenter Walt Collins and was followed by a screening of the winning productions at the SAE Institute, Melbourne. The awards

are in their 35th year, the second longest running in Australia, and aim to recognise film and media excellence in the education sector and screen industry.

Plea to get on your bike

MANY WILL have missed or dismissed the news recently that there are currently 200,000 more cars on New Zealand’s roads than there were a year ago. Assuming equal distribution, that means 20,000 in the Garden City, if we can still call our city that. And many, of those, will be in the Ilam area, which has witnessed considerable intensification in the last decade. The problem of parking is well trumpeted in the inner city, but little is said or done in our suburb where the problem is equally acute. The city council and Canterbury University have done so much to improve the way forward for cyclists but far too few are responding to this incentive. The flatness of Christchurch is so conducive to cycling. Ask those who dare and they will say

they beat vehicular transport to any destination in the city especially at peak times. And once there, the time and expense involved with securing a park is obviated. Yet Cantabrians are staying away from cycling in their droves and the excellent cycle lanes in our area are forlorn. We visited the fabulous city

of Copenhagen recently. One of the reasons for its pre-eminence and recognition as a future city is the population’s commitment to cycling to achieve sensible traffic. There, 50 per cent of the population is biking. Cyclists there are treated with respect, but they earn that respect by being responsible with all facets of cycling. Many here tell me they refuse to bike to work or uni to avoid “bad hair days” – perhaps we ought to revisit compulsory wearing of helmets? We also did an e-bike tour in Europe and power assisted bikes are certainly an eye to the future. If nothing changes and we clutch on to our predilection with the motor vehicle, the price we ultimately pay will be frightening. More streets will be blocked, traffic flows more painful, verges, lawns and gardens sacrificed, and our sacred environment further compromised. Perhaps the time is right to delve deep into your shed or at least test ride an e-bike.

His job was at The Princess Margaret Hospital at the time but now it’s in the main hospital. What got you into volunteering? When I became qualified as a medical laboratory technologist in 1970, I wanted to go overseas. So I decided to volunteer in Papua New Guinea for two years. It was a great experience but there wasn’t as much work on as planned. Because of this,

I started up Girl Guides. I spent my afternoons teaching Guides to the local children and they were very enthusiastic. One day when I was doing a sponsored

walkathon, I saw a man collecting money in a Scout uniform. The next day I saw him again at the bank and I thought he looked quite nice. I was then introduced

to him at a party a few week’s later. Colin and I dated for a couple months and then got engaged. I was able to cut my trip short by nine months so I could

get married. In December 1971 I spent six weeks with him and his family in Sydney. We got married in January 1972 in Auckland and have been married now for 45 years. What were you doing before Zonta? I was a medical laboratory technologist professionally and I worked in the laboratory at the Christchurch Hospital. From there I changed profession and went into pharmaceutical and did hospital oncology drug sales. I did that for 20 years and I retired about five or six years ago and then I started volunteering at the shop at the hospital. I’m not very good at doing nothing. I then got bowel cancer so I took a year off while I had surgery and chemotherapy – which has fortunately got rid of it all. Currently I have a job two days a week at the hospital, which is a paid job, as the co-ordinator of the wayfinder volunteers who are out the front of the hospital. How did you get involved with Zonta? I got involved about 26 years ago. I was new to Christchurch and I always wanted to work in the community having been involved all my life.

of women and girls in the community I heard the group was a service club and worked particularly to promote the status of women and girls and that’s what I’m enthusiastic about. It’s also a way to meet other professional businesswomen so I joined Zonta. I’ve been with it ever since because I love it and I get a good satisfaction out of what we can achieve for other people. How did you get involved with the Zonta Sports Awards? The sports awards had started just before I joined. Vicki Buck approached Zonta with the idea. In those days, 26 years ago, girls never got any recognition for their achievement in sport. We thought it was a good suggestion and it fitted with our goal of trying to promote the status of girls. For five years it was just the girls and the boys had a separate awards night. And then the organisation which ran the boys awards fell through. School Sport Canterbury then asked if we’d consider combining the two and we said ‘oh yes alright’ and we’ve just continued. Although girls do get a lot more publicity than they used to – it’s still not as much as the boys do. So I’m quite passionate about getting them recognised for their amazing achievements. It blows your mind

what they’re achieving. What sports have you played? I was a New Zealand archery champion and then I went on to pistol shooting and they’re both ones which never get any recognition because they’re not very public sports so that’s another reason I think the Zonta Sports Awards are good. I was in my late 30s when I picked up archery and did well quite quickly. In the sports awards there is a category for the disabled and I’m passionate about that because once I had stopped shooting, Neroli Fairhall, the paraplegic Archer, came on

top. She went to the able-bodied Commonwealth Games with me as her assistant, and won the gold medal – which was terribly exciting. She needed me to fetch and carry the arrows and things. A couple years after that, she asked me to go with her to the World Paraplegic Games in England which was an amazing experience and made me very passionate about recognising disabled people in their sports and how massively they can achieve. The other category which is a passion for me in sport, other than sport in general, is the coach, referee

or administrator. They only get criticism when they get it wrong, but they don’t get any praise for when they get it right. What do you like the most about all your different roles? Just seeing the difference you can make. Like with the volunteering at the hospital, you can see the strain go off someone’s face when you tell them where to go for their appointment. My satisfaction is knowing our working is making a difference in somebody’s life. What do you like doing outside of work?

My relaxation is in craft. I didn’t have time to continue with it when I was doing pharmaceutical because I was travelling. I’ve always knitted, but I’ve taken up spinning and I’m renewing my interest in weaving. I’m with the Christchurch Guild of Weavers and Spinners, I’m currently the treasurer, which isn’t my forte but no one else would do it so I’m doing that. I get a lot of satisfaction mixing with other women. Do you have any children? We don’t have any children but we do have a dog and she’s very treasured. The dog’s named Briar and she’s an airedale terrier. We’ve only ever had airedale’s, we fell in love with out first one and Briar is our fifth. Briar’s nearly six-years-old. She’s a rehome so we’ve only had her for one year but she’s very much part of our family now and very loved. What’s your best piece of advice for women? Probably just to believe in themselves and their abilities and to believe they can make a difference in the world. Even if its in a small way, they can get that satisfaction, knowing what they do has made a difference to someone else’s life.

Riccarton High student earns prestigious scholarship By Emily O’Connell RICCARTON HIGH School year 13 student Yan Gong has won a $10,000 scholarship towards his university studies. The Canterbury University scholarship is for first year international students and is offered to 25 students worldwide. It recognises and supports top achieving international students. Yan moved to New Zealand from China in 2015, and Yan Gong started at Riccarton High. The school’s careers adviser Vanessa Kidd said the scholarship is brilliant and only one secondary school student in New Zealand received it last year. She said Yan is a hard working, resilient student who takes every opportunity and helps other students. Ms Kidd said Yan was over the moon to have won. He will start a Bachelor of Commerce at Canterbury University next year.

NOT EVEN a broken leg could stop Halswell Hornets’ Billy Spivey from going to cheer on the Kiwis as they thumped Scotland 74-6 on Saturday. Billy, 7, broke his femur about three weeks ago after crashing his motor-cycle and has to be in a wheelchair until November 16. His mother Nicola said originally the Halswell family had bought tickets to the pool play match at AMI Stadium in the general stand. But they had to buy new tickets in the wheelchair seating area at the bottom of the City Care Stand so Billy could still go, she said. Ms Spivey, Billy and his three-year-old brother, Benji, sat together. Dad Hamish and some friends were also allowed to sit with them. Ms Spivey said it was “awesome” to sit there because it was close to the action. Billy’s Halswell Hornets gold team, which his dad coaches, won junior team of the year at the Canterbury rugby league awards. He was the second highest points scorer. Ms Spivey is the junior club captain.

Last week, Billy chatted to Kiwis star Shaun Johnson after the team’s open training session at Linfield Park. “It was cool. He said ‘I hope your leg gets better’,” Billy said. The Kiwis playmaker went on to score a try and kick nine conversions during Saturday’s match to become the Kiwis highest ever points scorer. The win has set the Kiwis up for a crunch match against Tonga in Hamilton on Saturday after they beat Pacific rivals Samoa 3218 on the weekend. Ms Spivey said after the game the family got to meet Kiwis utility Elijah Taylor, who recognised Billy from last week’s training session. Some of the Kiwis officials also recognised him, and gave Billy the thumbs up and a wave as the team walked onto the field, she said. Billy said he wants to play for the Kiwis when he grows up, and the NRL premiership-winning Melbourne Storm because he has the same name as their fullback Billy Slater. Ms Spivey said while their friends joked about their kids being named after well-known rugby league players, it was not intentional.

News Difficult words no problem for Lucy St Margaret’s home to country’s top speller IT MEANS lacking in courage and resolution, but Lucy Jessep certainly wasn’t as she correctly spelled pusillanimous. The St Margaret’s College year 10 student is New Zealand’s 2017 Spelling Bee champion. She triumphed over hundreds of students from more than 100 schools to win the title. Runner-up was year 9 student George Turner, of Marlborough Boys’ College. In a tightly-fought competition, the pair battled it out for first place over four rounds after earlier defeating 19 other spellers at Te Papa in Wellington. Lucy took the title with pusillanimous. The Burnside teen was awarded a trophy and $5000 towards her studies. An enthusiastic debater who loves learning languages, Lucy said she was just focused on “not getting out in the first round,” and because of that

didn’t consider winning. Her win was still sinking in, she said. New Zealand Spelling Bee founder Janet Lucas said the nail-biting final was fitting for a competition in which the talent was stronger than ever. “Lucy did incredibly well to triumph in such a strong field. This was the toughest and longest competition we have ever had. We have seen some truly amazing spelling today.” “The New Zealand Spelling Bee is fiercely competitive in a fun way. It’s a sport with an intellectual focus – students train and prepare to compete, and it’s clear from the excellent results that they trained hard.” The finalists won their places out of a field of hundreds of year 9 and 10 students. The rigorous competition began with a written classroom test, followed by six regional semifinals.

HOW TO COOK BARBECUE GRILLED BUTTERFLIED WHOLE CHICKEN

Ingredients

2 bunches Asparagus 1 Avocado 1 Lemon 1 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil 1 Pepper 1⅓ cups Dried cranberries ½ cup Walnuts ¼ cup Parsley 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper

1 whole butterflied chicken 1 to taste salt & freshly ground pepper Barbecue sauce Directions Preheat grill to medium. Get surface temperature to about 200 deg C. Clean and oil well. Clean the chicken if you desire and pat dry. Cut the backbone out of the chicken with sharp kitchen scissors. You could use a knife, but the scissors are much safer and work great. With a large knife, give the breastbone a large nick in the front of the chicken to help the bird lay flat. Rinse the inside of the bird out, trim any loose fat and extra skin. Pat dry again. Give the bird a good sprinkle of salt and pepper. You could use any seasoning you want here. Place skin down on the grill. Flip after you get a nice browning on the skin after about 12-15min.

Give the chicken a good brushing of barbecue sauce. Grill another 3-4min until the sauce is browning well.

To make the salsa, combine avocado, juice of the lemon, oil, diced pepper (yellow), dried cranberries, walnuts (toasted) and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and toss well. Cook asparagus in plenty of boiling, salted water for 2min or until just tender to the bite. Drain asparagus and arrange on a serving plate. Scatter salsa over asparagus to serve.

Total grilling on the second side should take 20-25min. Let set for 5 minutes then cut and serve.

News Huge turnout for bike show By Sophie Cornish THE SMASH Palace Bike Show took New Brighton by storm on Saturday. “It went really well, everyone had a ball,” said event organiser Jason Mill. Originally, 20 heats were planned for the demonstration but Mr Mill said on the day there was close to 60. Tony Hockley, 82, son of former bike enthusiast and founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club Geoff Hockley, raced on the day. The event was linked to the late Mr Hockley, who was involved in the first ever bike races on New Brighton beach in the early 1900s. Event organisers had one lap planned for Tony, who ended up lining up for the next six races afterwards. “We couldn’t get him off the bike,” said Mr Mill. Between 3000-4000 spectators showed up and the seaside market said they had one of their busiest markets of the year, said Mr Mill. Originally the event was planned to be biennial, however, following feedback from spectators, Mr Mill thinks this may change. “The word I kept hearing was next year . . . if the community wants it, we will do it.”
